In the coming two blogs we will explore winners of AI Blitz โšก 7 and learn more about their journey. This blog is a great resource for AI newbies! ๐Ÿ”Ž

Their stories are sure to inspire beginners in Machine Learning. Read on to get some guidance, learn new tools and tricks. Maybe someday you will have the story of your journey up here!

In this segment of AIcrew stories, Vrushank and Vyom from AIcrowd meet up with Vadim Kimakin, the leaderboard winner for the AI Blitz 7: Perseverance. ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ Letโ€™s Meet Vadim

Vadim Timakin, a sixteen-year-old ML Engineer, hails from Penza in Russia. Along with winning ML competitions, Vadim is currently finishing his high-school courses. AI Blitz 7: Perseverance was Vadim's first competition on AIcrowd's platform.

๐Ÿš— Vadim's Machine Learning Journey

Vadim's Machine Learning journey started with an email from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He had been an avid participant of Mathematics Olympiads so the invite to join the upcoming  Deep Learning School appealed to Vadim.

After getting acquainted with basic ML concepts, Vadim decided to take on competitive Machine Learning (which stemmed from his interest in competitive Mathematics challenges). Along with his friend, he started tackling competitive ML challenges and hackathons.  A big break for Vadim came when his team managed to bag the second prize at the AI Journey 2020 by ODS. He decided to invest the whooping $5000 payout into robust hardware that would aid his future ML ventures.

๐Ÿงญ His Approach

Vadim's solutions followed a pattern of employing smart work wherever possible, which involved utilizing various python packages and libraries like albumentations to ease his workflow and rather focused on spending his time devising better functions to perfect his solution. One such example can be seen through his custom scheduler CosineBatchDecayScheduler in his Rover Classification to schedule and track his batch tasks efficiently.

๐Ÿ‘€ Looking Around

Along with being an excellent problem solver, Vadim proved to be an astounding community contributor, which led to him being a close contender for the Community Contribution winner. His notebook Mars Rotation [A-Z] (0.0 MSE guide) guided the readers meticulously through the dataset, API setups, utility choices, and needs.

Apart from his highly descriptive notebooks, Vadim also shared his Contest winning codes and implementations, which we recommend checking out! You can find his notebook here.

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿซ Vadim's Advice for You

Being a high-school student himself and seeing the competition around him in the various contests he takes part in, Vadim thinks it's never too late to start anything. Talking about his learning experience, Vadim said,โ€ When you start learning a new skill at the age of 16, your school and home life are much less occupied. It is the best time to take up something new to learnโ€. โ€œLearning a new skill at 16, when you still have time apart from school doubles the benefitโ€, Vadim concludes. We agree with Vadim! Itโ€™s never too late to learn a new skill. For beginners looking to hone their AI skills, we recommend trying out AIcrowd practice puzzles or participating in the upcoming edition of AI Blitz!
